STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A group of Staten Island elected officials want the city and state to take a closer look at a Midland Beach migrant shelter they say is operating unlawfully.

In their letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams, and John Greenwood — executive director of Homes for the Homeless, the owner and operator of the shelter at 1111 Father Capodanno Blvd. — the group contends the shelter is operating in violation of a host of city codes and other regulations.

In honor of Black History Month — which began Feb. 1 — and as a way to highlight the achievements and contributions made by African-Americans, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis recognized U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Zeita Merchant on her promotion to Rear Admiral on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Merchant, commander of The Port of New York, will be etched in history come April when she attains the rank of rear admiral, thereby becoming the highest-ranking African American woman in the U.S. Coast Guard’s (USGC) 233-year history.
