 Law enforcement officials, politicians and business executives alike joined together recently for a roundtable discussion on the threat of retail crime facing Staten Island.

The event was held Friday afternoon at the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce office in New Springville and included the likes of Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, Staten Island Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Linda Baran, and Tom Wickham, the senior vice president for state and local policy of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Our office recently helped two constituents recover more than $17,000 owed from the Social Security Administration after their mother passed away. 

The constituents submitted all requested paperwork to obtain the funds due their mother's estate, however, every time they contacted the Social Security Administration they were told "it is being processed." After three years of no answers, the constituents contacted our office looking for assistance.

Recently our office helped a Brooklyn senior who lost thousands of dollars after one of his checks was stolen and fraudulently cashed. 

He mailed a check to pay off a bill, only to discover the funds had been cashed elsewhere. His bank was uncooperative in helping him get his money back, so he contacted our office for help. 

Our office reached out to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on his behalf, and we were recently notified that he recovered the almost $3,000 he lost right around Thanksgiving.

Gravesend neighbors and politicians want the city to cancel plans to open a homeless shelter in the neighborhood. 

Despite the rain on Sunday,  Dec. 3, a large crowd of south Brooklyn residents gathered on 86th Street to protest the opening of a 150-bed facility at the corner of 25th Avenue. The facility, which is planned to be operated by Bronx-based VIP Community Services, is being developed by 86th Street NY LLC, and will likely be for single men.
