Malliotakis Helps Staten Island Resident Prove to IRS She is Alive
Several months ago, a constituent came into our office with her accountant looking for assistance with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS had been giving her and her accountant the run around for quite some time, and with no options left to exercise, she turned to our office for help.
Although this constituent was still receiving social security payments, she had not received tax refunds from 2019 or 2020 or any COVID-19 stimulus checks because the IRS considered her to be deceased.
My office was able to quickly get her an appointment with the Social Security Administration that wrote a letter to the IRS on her behalf stating she was alive. Despite being sent the letter multiple times, the IRS never acknowledged receipt.
My office continued to contact the IRS regarding this matter, and this past October, we were able to schedule an in-person meeting between the constituent and the IRS. After the meeting, the IRS finally deemed the constituent to be alive and well and committed to providing her all money she was owed by the federal government - about $3500 - within 90 days.
Typically, a case like this can take up to seven years to resolve, but my office was able to correct the situation in a few short months. She and her accountant are thrilled beyond measure and are extremely grateful for the assistance my office was able to provide in contacting the federal agencies.
