Malliotakis Helps Constituent Reclaim Student Loan Forgiveness After Check was Fraudulently Cashed

Our office recently helped a young woman from Brooklyn reclaim $21,682 in student loan forgiveness after her check was stolen and fraudulently cashed. 

After she contacted our office, we reached out to the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Bureau of Fiscal Services (BFS) on her behalf to initiate an investigation and work to reclaim the stolen funds.

Our office was able to have BFS reissue the check to her loan provider, which then refunded her the money via direct deposit to protect the funds from being stolen once again. 

Cracking down on postal crime, mail theft and check fraud is a top priority for our office and we continue to urge the Treasury Department and IRS to implement measures to prevent the defrauding of taxpayers.
