Malliotakis, YMCA Announce Funding for New Ventilation Systems

November 20, 2023

(STATEN ISLAND, NY) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today joined the YMCA of Greater New York to announce $1 million federal funding secured for the Y to make ventilation repairs at two YMCA branches serving both the North and South shores of Staten Island.

"This organization is so important because they serve young children all the way to our our elderly - it gives them many things to do to keep themselves mentally and physically active and healthy, and I'm really happy to have helped earmark this money," Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis said. "We're happy to support Staten Islanders on the South Shore and the North Shore, and we appreciate the work that the YMCA does. It is a very important facility and resource for so many, and I hope that many people in our community will benefit and find enjoyment as a result of this grant. You have swim lessons, life guard training and certification, exercise programs - there's a lot of things that can be done just in the pool facility, let alone all the other activities that you have at the YMCA."

Specifically, the funding will be used to replace pool dehumidification systems and make HVAC upgrades. The project, which is expected to be completed in 2024, will allow the Y to continue serving Staten Islanders with recreational, fitness and lifesaving aquatics programming, including infant swim lessons and life guard certification classes.

"We're so excited to be here to accept this capital award for the upgrades to our pool and replacement of the dehumidification system," Meghan Sinback, Executive Director of the Broadway and South Shore YMCAs. "The YMCA truly committed to increasing access to swim lessons and water safety programs, and that all starts with a well-functioning and a well-maintained pool. We are sincerely grateful for Congresswoman Malliotakis for obtaining this award for us."

Founded in 1852, today the Y serves a diverse population of more than half a million New Yorkers who learn, grow, and thrive through programs and services at 24 branches across New York City.
