Malliotakis to Yellen: Americans Deserve to Know Why Biden Pushed Spending Despite Nearing Debt Limit

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11), a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, today questioned U.S. Department of the Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who is originally from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, regarding her delay in notifying Congressional leadership that the U.S. Government was nearing its debt limit following the passage of President Biden's $1.7 trillion omnibus package in December 2022.
"As someone who was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and attended Fort Hamilton High School, you know my district is home to hardworking Americans who are trying to make ends meet during record-high inflation," Malliotakis said. "As this Administration continues to recklessly print and spend money, it's pushing the American people to their limits. This Administration is literally giving money with one hand and then taking it with the other when people are paying higher costs at the supermarket, gas pump, and for their utility bills. As you know, Bay Ridge is home to many seniors who are struggling to stay in their homes, it's nearly impossible for young families to buy their first home, and CNBC reports credit card debt is at an all-time high putting households near a breaking point. All this, while the fed continues to raise interest rates and Democrats continue their spending spree. The public deserves to know how long you were aware that the massive spending packages were pushing us closer to the debt limit and why you stayed silent for so long when you should've been sounding the alarm."
Malliotakis added: “It's unfortunate that our Treasury Secretary, who admitted she was wrong when she said inflation is transitory two years ago, is now denying the fact the printing and spending money doesn't cause inflation. It's one lie after another from this Administration but at least she acknowledged that Biden knew we were about to hit the debt limit and have to move to extraordinary measures and irresponsibly jammed through an additional $1.7 trillion in spending anyway.”
