Malliotakis Will Vote For McCarthy Stopgap to Prevent Shutdown

September 29, 2023

The measure would continue to fund government through October 31 while cutting excessive, wasteful spending and securing our border to stop the flood of migrants in New York City

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today released the following statement regarding her intention to support House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's temporary funding plan to keep the government funded through October 31:

"Congress has a responsibility to ensure our federal government is funded and working for American citizens. Everyone knows that Washington spends too much and is often dysfunctional, and real reforms are needed to bring back fiscal sanity and national security. As we continue to debate a full funding package that respects taxpayers and protects our citizenry, I will support Speaker McCarthy's temporary funding plan that will continue funding the government at reduced levels for one month and implement the border security provisions that I have been advocating for and the majority of Americans support. To date, the House has passed four of the twelve appropriations bills and the Senate has passed none. This plan will allow more time for the House and Senate to negotiate all twelve appropriations bills and stop the unsustainable and unsafe flow of border crossers who have made their way to New York City. Equally as important, it keeps our government from shutting down, programs Americans rely on running, and continues pay for our military service members and government employees. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to put aside differences and support this commonsense plan."
