Malliotakis Statement on Minor League Baseball Returning to Staten Island

July 14, 2021

(STATEN ISLAND, NY) – Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today released the below statement regarding a group of investors, including supermarket mogul John Catsimatidis, who are working to bring a minor league baseball team back to Staten Island to play out of Richmond County Bank Ballpark in 2022 and utilize the stadium for concerts as early as this year. Last year, the Staten Island Yankees were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the MLB's decision to cut 40 teams from the Minors.

"I'm delighted to see my good friend John Catsimatidis and this group of investors step up to save our stadium and bring baseball back to Staten Island. Our community has a shared love of baseball, and I look forward to once again having America's Pastime, concerts and other community events back in our borough as soon as the end of this year. John loves both baseball and Staten Island and I'm confident this is a partnership that will be a win-win for all, particularly the residents of Staten Island who will benefit from entertainment, recreation, and economic stimulus."
