Malliotakis Statement on Mayor's Blueprint to End Gun Violence

January 24, 2022

(STATEN ISLAND, NY) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) issued the following statement regarding New York City Mayor Eric Adams' Blueprint to End Gun Violence:

"I was pleased to hear that Mayor Adams is taking action to reinstate a police unit to specifically go after gangs and gun violence in our city, add more cops to patrol our subways, and seek changes to the disastrous bail law and the 'Raise the Age' law that has become more like a gang recruitment act. While I'm happy to hear the city will shift ThriveNYC funds to actually address severe mental illness, we should also be working with jails, hospitals, and families to better utilize Kendra's Law to provide court-ordered outpatient services and supervision for the mentally ill. I have long advocated for these commonsense policy changes, and if implemented correctly, they will make our streets safer.

"While the Mayor's blueprint specifically focuses on gun violence, other crimes such as car theft, robbery, rape, and assault have also skyrocketed and are in need of his attention. This is why the Mayor should restore the $1 billion cut from the NYPD's budget, commit to appointing more law and order judges, and push Governor Hochul to appoint a better parole board, because the current one keeps releasing cop killers, murderers, and dangerous criminals back onto our streets.

"I've introduced legislation at the federal level that would go after those who lie or forge information in an attempt to illegally purchase firearms, and I look forward to working with the Mayor to continue to go after illegal guns and those who traffick them."
