Malliotakis Statement on Government Reopening
(NEW YORK, NY) – Today, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) released the following statement after voting to reopen the government and fund it through January 30th at the same funding levels she voted to pass in September:
"Today, I am glad to once again vote to fully fund our government and end the unnecessary shutdown that caused pain for millions of Americans. From SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) benefit disruptions to air traffic delays and federal employees not getting paid, this shutdown has caused 42 days of pain for American citizens, the federal workforce, and our nation's economy. This entire foolish exercise, led by New York's own Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, achieved nothing as the bill we passed tonight contains the same funding levels that House Republicans passed in September except extends the funding until January 30th instead of November 21st.
I am glad that programs like SNAP, WIC, and Veterans benefits will be extended for an entire year to avoid similar disruptions in the event that Democrats recklessly choose to shutdown the government again in the New Year.
I applaud the 8 Senate Democrats who defied Chuck Schumer and did the right thing for our country. Senator Chuck Schumer has failed Americans and further embarrassed New Yorkers by pushing for the shutdown to continue. Upon this bill being signed, officially ending the Schumer Shutdown, Schumer should step down."
