Malliotakis Statement on Adams Push for Work Authorization

August 31, 2023

(STATEN ISLAND, NY) - Today Congresswoman Malliotakis (NY-11) released the following statement regarding New York City Mayor Eric Adams' calls for the federal government to expedite work authorizations for migrants residing in New York City illegally.

"Under New York City's "Our City, Our Vote" law, migrants residing in New York City for a mere 30 days who are granted work authorizations could become eligible to vote in our municipal elections for mayor, borough president, city council and other local office. Not only is this unconstitutional, but it diminishes American citizenship and the sacrifices of so many immigrants in our community who worked hard, followed the rules, became U.S. citizens and earned the privilege and their right to vote. Mayor Adams’ decision to appeal the State Supreme Court’s ruling to invalidate that law while promoting work authorizations for the tens of thousands of migrants currently in our city, should be deeply concerning to all New Yorkers. Instead, the Governor and the Mayor should be focused on removing the burden from communities in my district, and that starts with calling on the President to implement tangible border security measures to stop the flow of illegal crossers along our Southern border, urging Senator Schumer to bring H.R. 2 which passed the House in May for a vote in the Senate, reversing the city’s failed “right to shelter” policy and removing unvetted migrants from our parks, schools, and residential neighborhoods. Furthermore, Mayor Adams should immediately drop his appeal of the State Supreme Court's ruling overturning non-citizen voting.”
