Malliotakis: Senator Sanders is a Communist Sympathizer

July 13, 2021

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11), daughter of a Cuban refugee and member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today released the below statement following Senator Bernie Sanders' comments about the ongoing protests against Cuba's communist regime. Sanders, a self-avowed Democratic Socialist who has previously praised Castro's regime, blamed U.S. sanctions for the six decades of economic and human rights abuses on the island nation:

"Senator Sanders' comments blaming the United States for the atrocities that have occurred in Cuba for the past six decades are absolutely outrageous and do nothing but amplify the regime's false narrative. Cuba does business with nearly every other country, with its largest trading partners being Canada, Venezuela, China, Spain, and the Netherlands. What has this gotten the Cuban people? Absolutely nothing. Cuba's communist regime takes everything for itself while the Cuban people live in squalor. Instead of sympathizing with a communist government that abuses, tortures, and murders its own people, I encourage Senator Sanders to go to Cuba and hear directly from the people about their suffering, poor living conditions and their desire to come to the United States to experience freedom, democracy and human rights."
