Malliotakis, Schumer, Gillibrand Push Army Corps to Prioritize Funding for Staten Island Seawall Project

October 26, 2021

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Today Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) joined New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand in pushing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to use the funding made available in the Disaster Supplemental passed on September 30, 2021, for the next phase of construction of the East Shore Seawall project.

Due to supply chain shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and multiple redesign requests from New York City, the cost for the Seawall project has increased to where additional funding is necessary to see the project through to its completion.

Currently, the Seawall project is proceeding on schedule. New York City recently submitted plans for additional drainage projects for the U.S. Army Corps which allows for construction of the project’s interior drainage portion to begin. The City is working to issue contracts for this phase of construction now.

"As you are aware, funding made available within the Disaster Supplemental included $3 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers for construction of flood and storm reduction projects," the lawmakers wrote. "The high levels of precipitation from this most recent extreme weather event was a stark reminder to the residents of Staten Island of the risks they continue to face as they wait for this project to be constructed. We cannot underestimate the importance of how urgently this project must be completed."
