Malliotakis: Rising Crime in New York City Could be Solved with Common Sense Policies

May 17, 2021

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today released the below statement following New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's announcement that he will be placing an additional 250 officers on the subway after the recent spike in crime, including four individuals who were slashed, stabbed or punched in separate incidents Friday morning:

"It's good that Mayor de Blasio finally recognizes the need to place additional police officers on our subways to help keep riders safe; something that I said was needed in 2019. It's unfortunate that it's taken the Mayor this long to acknowledge that the absence of police presence leads to skyrocketing crime. Many violent attacks and other crimes could have been prevented with commonsense policies. While this is a step in the right direction, the Mayor needs to reinstate the NYPD's plainclothes unit, stop emptying our jails in his rush to close Rikers and fully restore the funding he cut from the police department last year."
