Malliotakis & Ranking Member of House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul Call on Biden to Act as Leader of the Free World on Communist Cuba

July 19, 2021

(MANHATTAN, NY) – Cuban American Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) yesterday joined Congressman Michael McCaul (TX-10), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and members of the Cuban community in New York City in calling on Presiden Biden to Act as leader of the free world against the communist regime in Cuba.

"We want the Biden Administration to help liberate Cuba," said Congresswoman Malliotakis "The Cuban people have said they've had enough of the communist regime; they want liberty and they want freedom. America is the nation of freedom and opportunity - the beacon of hope around the world. We want the United States, the United Nations (UN), and all democracies to join the Cuban people in their quest for freedom, democracy, and basic human rights."

"As the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee that oversees the UN, we think it's an atrocity that the UN Human Rights Council has the most egregious human rights violators as members right now, including Cuba, Venezuela, China, and Russia. Right now the Cuban people are being beaten, assaulted, abused, and abducted by the communist regime. We want the UN to act; we want Cuba and the other bad actors removed from the Human Rights Council and replaced with countries that actually respect the human rights of their citizens," Malliotakis added.

"This is about freedom and democracy against oppression from a very extreme dictatorship that has killed so many of its own people," said Ranking Member McCaul. "This is one of the first times we've seen the people of Cuba stand up against their oppressors. I, myself as an American, am so proud of the people of Cuba in the streets of Havana. The United States needs to do everything in its power to give support to these freedom fighters in Cuba."
