Malliotakis Pushes for Reopening Schools, Ending Double Standards at COVID Hearing

April 15, 2021

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11), member of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, pushed for the reopening of schools and highlighted Democrats' double standards at today's Subcommittee hearing with Drs. Anthony Fauci and Rochelle Walensky.

"The CDC has recommended schools return to in-person instruction five days a week, however, it has not resumed in New York City's school system leading to a large burden on parents and creating a mental crisis among our students," said Congresswoman Malliotakis. "Students long for socialization; school athletics are still shut down. Everything has been restricted to a computer at home to the point where we have sadly seen some students committing suicide. President Biden said he wanted America's schools reopened within his first 100 days. We are quickly approaching that deadline and I urge the Administration to speak with Mayor de Blasio and New York City school leadership to get our schools fully reopened."

Malliotakis added: "While scientific recommendations are consistent, some of the policies that we're seeing come out of this Administration and some leaders on the local and state levels really is a double standard, like keeping our northern border closed citing COVID, while our southern border is wide open for a CDC level four nation with migrants entering illegally from over 60 countries. The fact that migrant facilities are at a 900% capacity while struggling restaurants in my district are at 50% and many arbitrary restrictions remain in place, is hypocrisy. Trust is diminished when inconsistencies exist."
