Malliotakis Joins Calls to Shut Down Migrant Shelters Over Safety Violations

October 13, 2023

(STATEN ISLAND, NY) - Today Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) released the following statement regarding the potential closure of the migrant shelter located at the former Richard H. Hungerford School in Stapleton:

"I'm pleased to see that the Hungerford School migrant shelter on Tompkins Avenue will be shut down by the city for safety reasons, and urge the city to do the same for the shelter at St. John Villa Academy. Not only did we win our lawsuit because this was zoned for a school and not housing, but the judge issued a vacate order. Now we are learning that there are safety violations from the FDNY and we are calling on the City to stop using delay tactics and immediately shut down these unlawful facilities. Right to Shelter was never intended for citizens of other countries - the Mayor needs to stop misinterpreting the rule, the President needs to undo his Executive Orders that led to this crisis, and Senator Schumer should pass the House's border security act that's been sitting on his desk for the past five months."
