(WASHINGTON, DC) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today spoke on the House Floor to honor World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient Osceola “Ozzie” Fletcher.
During WWII, Fletcher, who worked as a crane operator on Omaha Beach, was injured in the line of duty on D-Day. Despite the injuries he sustained, Fletcher was overlooked for a Purple Heart award because of his race.
This past weekend at Fort Hamilton Army Base in Brooklyn NY, 99-year-old Fletcher was finally awarded the Purple Heart medal he earned more than seven decades ago.
