Malliotakis, Colleagues: Open New York City Senior Centers Now

June 29, 2021

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today, with the support of local elected officials, wrote a letter to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio calling on the city to reopen New York City senior centers that are funded under contract with the New York City Department for the Aging (DFTA) as soon as possible. On June 1, Mayor de Blasio announced senior centers would reopen on June 14 for indoor and outdoor activities on June 14, however, most senior centers remain closed.

"As you know, our seniors rely on DFTA centers for more than just socialization," wrote Congresswoman Malliotakis, SI Borough President Oddo, NYC Council Minority Leader Matteo, Councilwoman Rose, Councilman Brannan, Councilman Borelli, NYS Senator Lanza, NYS Assemblyman Reilly, Assemblyman Tannousis, and Richmond County DA McMahon. "After over a year without the services provided by senior centers, many across our community anxiously anticipated their reopening two weeks ago—only to be met by continued closures and disappointment. As an at-risk community, our seniors suffered exceptional difficulties throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and they deserve a safe and speedy “return to normal” after bravely enduring a full year of isolation."

Malliotakis has always been a strong supporter of the senior population in New York City, fighting against state budget cuts to senior center funding while a member of the New York State Assembly. In Congress, Malliotakis has introduced bipartisan legislation that makes it easier for community and senior centers to secure federal funds to help build or improve their facilities.
