Malliotakis' Coast Guard Funding Passes House

March 30, 2022

Secures $1.2 Million For Staten Island Coast Guard Pier Construction

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Today Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) secured $1.2 million for U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Sector New York for construction repairs to its Ft. Wadsworth station as part of the Don Young Coast Guard Authorization Act that passed the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill will now head to the Senate where it will be voted on, and if passed, will go to the President's desk.

The $1.2 million authorized under Malliotakis' amendment to the bill will be used to make repairs to the base's waterfront, including the concrete pier, replacing floating piers Alpha and Bravo, the South Breakwater and Ice Screen, the North Breakwater and Ice Screen, and the seawall.

"I promised to go to Washington and fight for our Coasties, which is why I'm pleased to see this bipartisan bill pass today that includes $1.2 million for USCG New York to make critical construction repairs to its Ft. Wadsworth station," Malliotakis said. "USCG Sector New York is the largest Coast Guard operational field command on the East Coast. By authorizing funding for these critical infrastructure projects and resources, our Coasties will be able to better serve the New York City community, keep our maritime commerce moving, stop the flow of drugs coming over our borders, conduct search and rescue missions, and protect our national security at sea."

Additionally, the Don Young Coast Guard Authorization Act:

  • Amends and enhances operational and personnel activities of the USCG
  • Institutes sexual assault and harassment procedures for the USCG
  • Updates shipping regulations enforced by the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), grants the FMC authority to set certain service standards and prohibit unreasonable and unjust late fees
  • Replaces and modernizes cutters, along with shoreside and cyber infrastructure
  • Stops the flow of illegal drugs and migrants into the United States

This afternoon, Malliotakis spoke on the floor in favor of the bill and to honor the life and legacy of the late Rep. Don Young, the Republican Party's longest-serving member in history, who passed away last week at the age of 88.

In January, Malliotakis announced USCG Sector New York will receive $5 million in federal funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to make safety, habitability, and quality of life upgrades to 154 legacy housing units at their Fort Wadsworth base. Malliotakis voted for the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which passed the House on November 5, 2021, and became law on November 15, 2021.

Congresswoman Malliotakis is a member of the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure, where she sits on the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit and the Subcommittee on Coast Guard & Maritime Transportation.
