(WASHINGTON, DC) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today released the following statement regarding the passage of House Democrats' immigration bills:
“In my conversations with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials, it's clear that the Biden Administration, in its dismantling of President Trump's policies, have created an unsustainable and dangerous surge at the southern border. Heartless, emboldened smugglers and cartels are profiting off the hopes of migrants whose perilous journeys all too often end with sex trafficking, drug trafficking and child abuse. Children as young as two years old have been smuggled, causing a humanitarian crisis at our southern border. In just the last few months alone, CBP has apprehended 4 terrorists, 132 gang members and 4,589 convicted criminals...and those are just the ones they caught.
"It is critically important that we know who is entering our country and that the laws in place are followed for everyone's safety. Instead of working with Republicans to put forward a bill that would secure our borders, implement a visa entry-exit tracking system, e-verify and modernize and streamline our immigration system, House Democrats chose to pass a partisan bill that provides amnesty to 2.5 million immigrants who entered unlawfully, including some who are convicted criminals.
"As the daughter of immigrants, I'm willing to work with my colleagues to implement common-sense policies, but it must start with securing our border, deporting those who have committed crimes and not rewarding those who have crossed our borders illegally by putting them ahead of immigrants who are following the rules."
