Malliotakis Announces $400,000 for Richmond University Medical Center

June 28, 2021

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) today announced the Department of Health and Human Services will award the Richmond University Health Center $400,000 in federal grants. The funds are to be used for mental health and substance abuse services at the Staten Island Children's Trauma Center.

"I'm happy to see residents' taxpayer dollars return to Staten Island to support Richmond University Medical Center and the critical mental health and substance abuse services they provide to our community," said Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis. "This year has been extremely difficult for our younger population, many of whom have been restricted to learning and socializing with peers on a computer at home. In addition to higher rates of childhood obesity and domestic violence, we've sadly seen some students commit suicide. With our economy opening up and schools resuming in-person instruction next year, our country and city are turning a corner and these funds will only bolster our communities' efforts to overcome this pandemic."

“Thank you to Representative Malliotakis for acquiring federal support for our Staten Island Children’s Trauma Center. The center provides evidence-based trauma assistance and treatment for children and youth, 3 to 21 years of age and their caregivers who have been, or continue to be, affected by traumatic events,” President and Chief Executive Officer, Daniel J. Messina, PhD, FACHE, said. “The center is a five-year initiative that provides trauma education to 1,000 children and youth within our 6 school-based programs, 2-day treatment programs for elementary and high school students, 2 outpatient child and adolescent mental health treatment programs, and 1 OPWDD outpatient clinic. Through this program, we will also provide our community partners with training and education on advanced evidenced-based trauma treatments and screening tools to better equip them to care for children, youth and families affected by trauma.”
