Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis Statement Regarding Proposal To Cut New York City Gifted & Talented Programs

January 13, 2021

(WASHINGTON, DC) - Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) released the following statement on the New York City Department of Education's (DOE) proposal to eliminate Gifted & Talented (G&T) specialized education programming in New York City Public Schools:

"It's disheartening to see continued efforts by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chancellor Richard Carranza to dismantle New York City's specialized education programs that are integral in preparing our students for success.

"G&T programs maximize students' full academic potential and accelerate the development of skills they'll need to be competitive in the real world. These programs should be expanded, not eliminated, and Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza's attempts to shut these programs down are a mistake.

"78% of kids who qualify for G&T programs are denied because of a lack of seats, forcing schools to hold lotteries to decide who is admitted into the programs. The DOE should work to provide more opportunities that challenge students to meet the demands of G&T programs, instead of denying them the ability to succeed because of a lack of space."

G&T programs offer specialized instruction and enrichment opportunities for New York City students who meet the programs' standards for academic excellence.
