STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Rep. Nicole Malliotakis said she was educating her colleagues as she spent three minutes Friday on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives blasting socialist ideology and the proposed policies of incoming NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani.

“Socialism is communism light,” said Malliotakis, a Republican who represents Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn.

Like millions of Americans, I’m deeply frustrated by this unnecessary government shutdown that was easily avoidable. It’s hurting families, small businesses, and service members across the nation, which is why I voted for a clean extension of existing funding levels that have previously passed both the House and the Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support.

The Trump administration is reinstating $187 million in counterterrorism funding grants to New York following outcry from the NYPD and a direct appeal from Gov. Kathy Hochul.

A Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesperson confirmed Friday that the White House was reversing the cuts to funds supporting bomb squads, patrols around sensitive targets like houses of worship, intelligence analysts and tech like radiation detectors to monitor for explosives.

The Trump administration will restore $187 million in cuts it had made to law enforcement funding, which would have devastated New York’s intelligence and counterterrorism operations, following a bipartisan push to reinstate the funds.

The White House will reverse the Department of Homeland Security’s cut of $187 million in counterterrorism funding for New York’s law enforcement, Gov. Kathy Hochul confirmed Friday.

Hochul hailed the reversal as a “victory for public safety and for every New Yorker who depends on our brave law enforcement and first responders to keep our state secure.”

“From the moment these devastating cuts were announced, I made it clear that New York would not stand by while our law enforcement and counterterrorism operations were defunded,” Hochul said in a statement.
