Rep. Malliotakis accuses city officials of concealing data on arrests made near in or near migrant shelters

CITYWIDE - BROOKLYN CONGRESSWOMAN NICOLE MALLIOTAKIS is denouncing officials for what she says is concealing the number of illegal immigrants being arrested in and near migrant shelters, after this week's shooting of two NYPD officers being shot by Venezuelan national and Tren de Aragua gang member. The assailant had been residing at a migrant shelter in Queens. Rep. Malliotakis (R-11), who represents parts of southwestern Brooklyn and Staten Island, said that she and a bipartisan group of local elected officials sent a letter to NYPD Commissioner Caban last October, requesting information relating to migrant crime in New York City, and followed up in early January with a FOIL (Freedom of Information Law) after having received no response. When the city on Jan. 14 acknowledged her request, officials informed the Congressmember to expect a respect on May 22, and then extended that wait time until August. In the meantime, NBC New York reported partial city data showing 1,200 arrests across 30 migrant shelters in New York City. Malliotakis said, "If it's so hard for a Member of Congress to get simple crime statistics from New York City in compliance with the FOIL, imagine how hard it is for ordinary taxpaying citizens to obtain information regarding public safety," Malliotakis said.
