Malliotakis stands with Staten Island NYPD leadership to kick off National Police Week

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) alongside NYPD Deputy Chief Joseph Gulotta kicked off National Police Week by highlighting the dedication of police officers on Staten Island and across New York City during a press conference at the 121st Precinct stationhouse in Graniteville on Monday morning.
In her speech, Malliotakis issued praise to the men and women in blue while also spotlighting her work on Capitol Hill, securing nearly $6 million in federal funding for the NYPD. According to Malliotakis, she is “the only federal representative from New York City to have secured funds for the NYPD in Congress over the last two years.”
“This week, we’re celebrating National Police Week and it’s incredibly important for elected officials to show their police officers that they respect and appreciate the work that they do,” Malliotakis said. “One way we can do that is by making sure they have the tools and resources they need to do their job.”
Over the last two years, the congresswoman said she has helped the NYPD secure forensic equipment, protective gear and plate reader systems that will be used to target car thefts.
“We support the men and women of the NYPD and I will continue to advocate and deliver critical funds so they can get the job done and keep us safe,” Malliotakis said. “If you see a police officer, thank them for the work they’re doing.”
Gulotta, of Patrol Borough Staten Island, pointed out an increase in auto-related crime on Staten Island, so the plate readers will help the NYPD by aiding in the identification of vehicles used in such illegal actions.
“Also looking at the trauma kits the congresswoman earmarked, I’ve watched numerous videos of our officers putting them in place, saving numerous people: Gunshot victims, vehicle accident victims — it’s really just a tremendous asset,” said Gulotta. “This funding is really going to go a long way in keeping Staten Island and the city of New York safe.”
Malliotakis recently requested funding to replace old tasers and belt trauma kits for the NYPD.
Later on this week, the House will be voting on pro-police legislation, such as a resolution expressing support for local law-enforcement officers while, condemning efforts to defund or dismantle local law-enforcement agencies; the Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act, which gives police precincts access to retired equipment; and the POLICE Act, which would strengthen penalties for law-enforcement assault.
