Malliotakis hands out Holtermann’s cakes on steps of Capitol in solidarity for Staten Island bakery

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R – Staten Island/South Brooklyn) handed out Holtermann’s Charlotte Russe cakes on the steps of our nation’s Capitol building today, another step in the feud between Staten Islanders and ‘The View’ host Whoopi Goldberg.

The congresswoman stood in front of a table filled with Charlotte Russes, saying that she had other members of congress ask her about the incident over the weekend after Goldberg was “disparaging” her “local bakery.”

“We decided it would be a great idea for the New York delegation to bring up some [Charlotte Russe‘s] for the members to try on their way into vote today, and just stand with the small business that is really an institution on Staten Island,” Malliotakis said. “We disagree with her politics, but Holtermann’s does not.”

Malliotakis is just one of a slew of Staten Island elected officials fuming over the suggestion that Holtermann’s did not take an order from Goldberg, an award-winning actress, due to her left-leaning political views.

The bakery turned down Goldberg’s birthday order of their Charlotte Russe cakes — made with yellow cake, raspberry, whipped cream with a cherry on top — after their boiler conked out, according to Jill Holtermann.

“We just couldn’t commit to the order. Our boiler was down at the time and at this point we just have to refer people to the news to understand more about it,” Holtermann explained.

Holtermann’s is the oldest bakery in New York state, serving patrons for the past 146 years.

This did not stop Goldberg from speculating otherwise on live television.

On Friday, Borough President Vito Fossella, Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D – North Shore/Brooklyn), Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo (R – Mid-Island), Assemblyman Michael Tannousis (R – East Shore/Brooklyn), Assemblyman Michael Reilly (R – South Shore), Councilman David Carr (R – Mid-Island ), and representatives from Malliotakis’ office and Councilman Joe Borelli’s office (R – South Shore) stood alongside the Holtermann family in a show of support.

During the event, Carr said the following: “Staten Islanders do not serve people according to their political backgrounds.”

In the week since this ordeal began, Staten Islanders from far and wide visited the beloved bakery to pick up some treats in solidarity.
