Malliotakis co-leads bipartisan effort to restore U.S. pharmaceutical production

In a bipartisan effort, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis is helping to lead the charge in bringing more pharmaceutical manufacturing to America.
The Staten Island and South Brooklyn congresswoman joined New York Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres, Florida Republican Rep. Maria Salazar, Florida Democratic Rep. Darren Soto, and Colorado Republican Rep. Jeff Hurd to reintroduce The Medical Manufacturing, Economic Development, and Sustainability (MMEDS) Act to Congress.
The MMEDS Act was originally presented for congressional consideration in 2023 as the MMEDS Act of 2023 by Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González-Colón of Puerto Rico in the House of Representatives and by then-Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in the Senate.
“I am proud to introduce the bipartisan MMEDS Act to bring medical manufacturing to the United States and revitalize an industry that once thrived in regions such as Puerto Rico,” Malliotakis said in a written statement.
“The COVID-19 pandemic made clear the urgent need to restore our domestic supply chain so that we are not dependent on adversaries like Communist China for critical pharmaceutical and medical supplies needed by America’s hospitals and patients. The support of my colleagues representing different corners of the nation demonstrates the broad, bipartisan recognition that strengthening our medical supply chain is a national priority. I also thank Puerto Rico’s Governor Jenniffer González-Colón for her leadership and partnership in advancing this important initiative,” she added.
Should the bill pass, it will introduce “federal tax benefits and other incentives” to American-based companies seeking to relocate or remain in the United States. There is a “particular focus” on moving these manufacturing facilities into “economically distressed areas across the nation and its territories.”
Malliotakis said, “I hope to get it passed as it helps economically distressed zones rehabilitate and job create, and helps us establish a resilient domestic supply chain. It is a win-win.”
