Malliotakis Visits SIUH Integrated Women & Newborn Center After Securing $2 Million For Construction

May 10, 2022

(STATEN ISLAND, NY) - Today Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) visited Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) to announce $2,000,000 she secured in this year's federal budget for the hospital's new Integrated Women and Newborn Center.

“Not only does Staten Island University Hospital provide world-class health care to our community, but it is also one of the largest hospitals in the New York City metropolitan area," Congresswoman Malliotakis said. "SIUH's women and newborn facilities have not been upgraded since 1979, with services currently being offered in three different locations across two floors in the hospital. The $2 million I've secured in this year's federal budget will help SIUH streamline its newborn and women's services, and potentially allow the department to deliver an additional 1,000 babies per year. I promised to go to Washington and fight for Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn, and I'm happy to have played a role in ensuring women in our community continue to have access to high-quality, patient-centered care.

SIUH will use the funds to complete construction of its new Integrated Women and Newborn Center, including the purchase of ten labor, delivery, and recovery rooms, three operating rooms, 37 maternity beds for post-partum care, and 12 nursey bassinets.

“Since this hospital opened, maternal child services have not been aligned for efficiency and just as important today, not aligned in the way families choose to experience this level of care and service,” noted Brahim Ardolic, MD, SIUH’s Executive Director. This new building solves the efficiency issue, and frees up existing space to be converted into advanced surgical suites to bring more services to Staten Island – it’s a win-win.”

Ardolic added: “Once again, Staten Island’s elected officials have come together to invest in our community’s future and this appropriation will benefit our borough for generations.” Dr. Ardolic said. “We are grateful for their advocacy on behalf of all those we are privileged to serve.”
