(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) applauded the House passage of the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2026, which includes nearly $1 million in funding she earmarked for New York law enforcement. One of three appropriations bills passed by the House this week, the legislation now advances to the U.S. Senate and provides critical support for the New York Police Department and the New York City Department of Correction. Through this appropriations bill, Congresswoman Malliotakis secured critical funding for public safety in New York City, including $460,500 for NYPD camera safety upgrades, $180,000 for NYPD license plate reader systems to target car thieves, and $359,421 for safety and security upgrades for the New York City Department of Correction. “I will always support our brave men and women in law enforcement and remain committed to ensuring they have the tools and resources they need to do their jobs safely and effectively,” said Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis. “At a time when certain policies have made their work more challenging, this funding delivers critical equipment that strengthens public safety. Since I have been in Congress, I have secured over $9 million for the NYPD for essential equipment and training, and last year helped restore $100 million in federal funding for the NYPD’s counterterrorism operations.” NYPD Camera Safety Upgrades - $460,500 The funding would be used for the purchase of cameras for much needed public safety upgrades in three heavily trafficked areas of her district. New York City has been at the forefront of increased crime due to the influx of migrants being bused from the southern border, disastrous bail reform, and an almost non-existent prosecution rate has created a haven for criminals of all kinds. These cameras will bring both peace of mind to her constituents but also show the criminals they are being watched. With an uptick in car theft and car break-ins in the area, which is difficult to combat due to the lack of cameras in the area and desolate nature at night. NYPD License Plate Reader Systems - $180,000 The funding would be used for the purchase of these systems used to combat automobile theft: speed enforcement applications such as slowing and maintaining posted speeds; traffic data collection. The portability of the systems allows for rapid deployment in problem areas. Over the last five years, car thefts across New York City have increased 15% and with the hard work of the New York Police Department these thefts on Staten Island have decreased by 11%. There is a lot of work left to do and these systems will help the NYPD protect our citizens. New York City Department of Correction Safety and Security Upgrades - $359,421 The funding would be used to enhance the safety and security of law enforcement officers including the safety and security of their K-9 unit. This includes but not limited to ballistic and stab-proof vests for the K-9 unit, trauma kits, respirator masks, and protective gear for correction officers. New York City has been at the forefront of anti-police policies and efforts to defund law enforcement. These efforts have made it to the Department of Correction. These policies have put our corrections officers in greater danger and have prioritized criminals over the safety of our law enforcement. This funding will make the workplace environment safer for the corrections officers as they carry out their dangerous jobs. |
