Malliotakis Calls Out Biden's Double Standard on Climate Change During Foreign Affairs Hearing

October 21, 2021

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - In today's House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee hearing, 'Preparing for COP26: United States Strategy to Combat Climate Change through International Development,' Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on International Development, International Organizations, and Global Corporate Social Impact, called out the Biden Administration for its double standards on combatting the impacts of climate change:

"President Biden's key international climate decision, to date, has emboldened China's carbon emissions spree," Malliotakis said during her opening remarks. "In rejoining the Paris Climate accord, a toothless agreement which let the Chinese Communist Party claim developing-nation status, he has explicitly assented to China's unchecked and deadly pollution of our atmosphere."

Under the current Accord, which President Biden failed to renegotiate terms to level the playing field for the United States, China and India, two of the world's largest polluters, are expected to get to zero emissions by 2060, whereas the United States only has until 2050.

Additionally, Malliotakis slammed President Biden's decision to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline, while approving Russia's Nord Stream2 pipeline, which Russia is currently using to hold European gas hostage. The KeystoneXL pipeline would have created thousands of jobs and allowed the United States to access high-quality Canadian oil. Now, Americans are paying for Biden's decision at the gas pump, with prices pushing five dollars a gallon in some states.

"The Biden Administration greenlighted Russia's Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a decision which not only flies in the face of the President's supposed rationale for shutting down Keystone XL, but one which makes our allies in Europe more reliant on Russian energy," Malliotakis added. "I could go on, but the inconsistency in Biden's international climate policy should be evident to all of us."
